WHAT ARE VOWS & WHAT'S A CEREMONY? To help you in making decisions for your special ceremony, let's take a look at what you need to do and what you can 'choose' to do. This will include what you Need to do legally and what you Choose to do by including family or religious traditions, special rites, music, poetry, and protocol for your ceremony. A selection of my personal favorite vows are available. I know it can be overwhelming and confusing to look at the whole mountain (the 'Ceremony') all at once, so we'll look at just one step at a time. first step on the trail up to the Mountain (the Ceremony) in which you make a 'Contract of Marriage' with each other. The 4 elements for a legal Contract of Wedlock in the State of Idaho 1. Marriage License You may obtain a marriage license in any County Clerk's office which is good throughout the State of Idaho and has no expiration date. The fee is $28, no waiting, no blood test, and valid until used.in Idaho. Idaho does not require witnesses, although there is a place for two witnesses to sign on the License Certificate. The State of Idaho does not recognize same sex marriages, cousin marriages, common--law marriages or proxy marriages. The County Clerk will require that you have proof of identity and residency (driver's license will do), that you have a legal right to contract for marriage i.e. 18 or more, years of age (or permission from parent or guardian) and not married to anyone else. If you have questions, call the County Recorder You will give the original and the copy to your Minister or Officiate, who will complete, sign and date them giving you the original back and then have the copy (that came with the original) recorded for you in the county that issued it. 2. Statement of Intention: Your officiate or minister can ask each of you each as simply as: "Do you choose to be married to____ ?" You each need to acknowledge an affirmative "I do". (vows, promises, rings and other rites or traditions are not required, but preferred by most couples). 3. Pronouncement: The Minister or Officiate will state that you are now legally husband and wife. 4. The Minister or Officiate: Dates, signs and files your license of record in the county where it was issued. No witnesses are required other than your Officiate in Your Officiate can be: an acting judge, retired judge, magistrate, city mayor, ships captain, designated officiate, or an ordained minister of any faith or religion. THAT'S IT! |

There are many are wonderful romantic traditions to include even if you have a small Elopement Style ceremony. Go to our page on "How Does A Ceremony Work?" It has many ideas for traditions and rites to include in your special ceremony. Vow samples can be mixed or matched, added to, and arranged however you wish They are to expresses your own hearts and can be the same for bride and groom or each say a different vow. Basic Wedding "do you's" are: (Groom or Bride): will you have (bride or groom) to be your lawful wedded wife or husband? "I do" Basic repeat after me Vows (Promises are): I, _______________, take you, ________________, in marriage; The Ring Exchange is a separate vow following the Wedding Vows and they can be introduced with a very special "Blessing of the Rings" which is the outward demonstration to the world that you have contracted in wedlock. The wedding vows and ring vows can be repeated after me (short phrases at a time), or you can memorize them or I can convert them to a simple “I do or I will". |
